Do you ever wake up the morning after a tough training session feeling like your legs have been replaced by lead? Or perhaps you’re managing a busy schedule and find that by mid-afternoon, your ankles feel heavy and your energy levels are hitting a wall.

It’s a common experience, and if you’ve looked into recovery tools, you’ve likely seen the sleek, futuristic-looking compression boots and the high-tech chambers of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Both are incredibly popular in the wellness and athletic worlds, but they work in fundamentally different ways.

If you are trying to decide which one deserves your time and investment, it helps to understand exactly what is happening beneath the surface. Is your goal to shift some fluid and ease temporary soreness, or are you looking for deep, cellular-level repair?

How do compression boots actually work?

You might have seen athletes sitting on a sofa, legs encased in what look like giant inflatable trousers. These are compression boots, and they use a process called intermittent pneumatic compression.

Think of it like a gentle, rhythmic squeeze that starts at your feet and moves up toward your hips. This mechanical movement and compression helps to encourage the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid. When you exercise hard, your muscles can experience temporary swelling and a buildup of waste products.

By applying external pressure, compression boots help "flush" these fluids out of the limbs and back into the central circulatory system. This is why many people find they offer immediate relief for that "heavy leg" feeling. It’s a mechanical solution to a mechanical problem: moving fluid from point A to point B.

What makes HBOT different?

While compression boots work on the movement of fluids, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) works on the quality of your internal environment. Instead of pushing fluid around from the outside, HBOT changes the way your body receives its most vital fuel: oxygen.

During an HBOT session, you relax in a pressurised chamber. This increased pressure allows your lungs to take in much more oxygen than would be possible at normal atmospheric pressure. At Flow Well, our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy sessions use 1.5 ATA (atmospheres absolute) at 93% oxygen.

This specific combination is designed to saturate your blood plasma with oxygen. Usually, oxygen is mostly carried by your red blood cells. Under pressure, that oxygen dissolves directly into your plasma, which can then reach areas where circulation might be restricted due to inflammation or injury.

Instead of just moving fluid, you are flooding your tissues with the energy they need to repair themselves from the inside out.

Cellular repair vs. fluid management

The biggest distinction between these two therapies is the "depth" of the recovery.

Compression boots are excellent for:

  • Reducing the perception of muscle soreness (DOMS).
  • Decreasing exercise-induced swelling.
  • Encouraging lymphatic flow and moving waste products.
  • Providing a relaxing, passive recovery experience.

HBOT is designed for:

  • Reducing inflammation: Research has shown that HBOT can help lower markers of muscle damage, such as creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), in study participants following intense exercise.
  • Supporting cellular energy: By delivering extra oxygen to the mitochondria (the powerhouses of your cells), HBOT supports the natural repair processes that keep your tissues healthy.
  • Long-term recovery: While compression boots help you feel better now, HBOT supports the body’s ability to heal and recharge for the long term.

Why we use 1.5 ATA for HBOT

When you look into HBOT, you might see different "pressures" mentioned: often ranging from 1.3 ATA up to 2.0 ATA or higher. At Flow Well, we’ve chosen 1.5 ATA because it offers a beautiful balance of comfort and effectiveness.

Scientific research indicates that 1.5 ATA is highly effective for general wellness and recovery. Some studies have even suggested that lower pressures can influence certain inflammatory genes just as strongly: if not more so: than higher pressures.

Operating at 1.5 ATA also makes the experience much more gentle on your ears and sinuses compared to the higher pressures often used in hospital settings (like 2.0 ATA). It allows you to enjoy a soothing, calm session while still receiving the significant benefits of increased oxygen saturation.

Can you use both?

The short answer is: absolutely. In fact, many of our clients find that they work best as a team. This is essentially the philosophy behind what we do at Flow Well.

If you combine the mechanical movement and compression of Vasotherapy (which includes specialised compression) with the oxygen saturation of HBOT, you are addressing recovery from two different angles. You are helping the body clear out the old and bringing in the new "fuel" it needs to rebuild.

Think of it like cleaning a house. Compression boots are like the broom that sweeps the dust out of the door. HBOT is like the delivery truck arriving with the fresh supplies needed to renovate the rooms. Both are useful, but they serve different purposes in the "renovation" of your body.

Is it right for you?

Deciding which tech is right for you often comes down to how you feel.

If you’ve just finished a marathon or a heavy leg day and your muscles feel tight and swollen, the mechanical ease of compression might be your first port of call. However, if you are dealing with persistent fatigue, lingering inflammation, or you’re an athlete looking to optimise your recovery on a deeper level, HBOT offers a science-led way to support your body’s natural healing.

It’s also important to remember that everyone’s body responds differently. What works for a professional athlete might be different from what works for someone managing a chronic condition like fibromyalgia or long-COVID.

A note on safety

While both therapies are non-invasive and generally very well-tolerated, it is always wise to listen to your body and seek professional advice if you have specific medical concerns. HBOT, for instance, may not be suitable for individuals with certain ear or lung conditions, or those who are pregnant. We always recommend a quick check-in to ensure the therapy aligns with your current health status.
