Have you ever reached the middle of the afternoon and felt like your internal battery was flashing red? Perhaps you’ve been searching for non-invasive healing therapies to support a persistent injury, or maybe you’re just looking for a way to boost energy levels naturally without relying on a fifth cup of coffee.

If you’ve been curious about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) but feel a little nervous about what actually happens inside that chamber, you aren’t alone. It’s perfectly natural to feel a bit hesitant about trying something that sounds a touch "high-tech." However, once you step into our space at Flow Well, you’ll find that the experience is far more grounded, relaxing, and gentle than you might imagine.

Our "gentle-first" philosophy is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that true recovery doesn't need to be aggressive or painful. Instead, it should be about providing your body with the optimal environment to do what it does best: repair and rejuvenate.

Here is exactly what you can expect during your first HBOT session, from the moment you walk through our doors to the "afterglow" you’ll feel when you leave.

Arriving and Setting the Scene

When you first arrive at Flow Well, the focus is entirely on your comfort. Unlike a clinical hospital environment, our space is designed to be a sanctuary of calm. We’ll start with a brief chat to see how you’re feeling and what you hope to achieve: whether that’s fibromyalgia support, recovery from a sports injury, or simply a desire to feel more vibrant.

Before your session, one of our team members will have a quick chat with you about how you’re feeling and what you’d like to get out of the session, so everything feels comfortable and aligned with your goals.

We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting cotton clothing. You’re welcome to bring a laptop, phone, headphones, or a book inside the chamber so you can properly settle in.

The one strict rule: no sharp objects. Because we’re working with increased pressure and oxygen, anything sharp is strictly prohibited for safety.

Entering the Chamber: Your Personal Quiet Space

The HBOT chamber itself is a clean, clinical, and surprisingly spacious environment. It’s not a "pod" from a science fiction film, but rather a sophisticated piece of equipment designed to create a peaceful atmosphere.

You’ll lie down on a comfortable mattress with a pillow. Once you’re settled, we’ll gently seal you in. You aren't "locked" in; our technicians are right there with you, monitoring the entire process through a viewing window and staying in constant contact via an intercom system. You are always in control. You can even stop the sessions yourself if you need to.

The Sensation of Pressurisation (The "Ascent")

As the session begins, you’ll hear the faint sound of air entering the chamber. This is the pressurisation phase, and it usually takes about 5 minutes.

The most common sensation people report is a slight pressure in the ears, very similar to what you feel when a plane is taking off or when you’re driving through the mountains. This happens because the air pressure inside the chamber is being gradually increased to a level higher than normal atmospheric pressure.

We will coach you on how to "equalise" your ears. Simple actions like swallowing, yawning, or the "Valsalva maneuver" (gently blowing through your nose while pinching it shut) will help ease that sensation immediately. We move at your pace; if you need us to slow down the pressurisation to give your ears more time to adjust, just let us know.

The Sweet Spot: Relaxing at Pressure

Once the chamber reaches full pressure, the sensation in your ears will disappear. You’ll spend the next 60 to 90 minutes simply breathing.

Through a comfortable mask, you will breathe in concentrated oxygen. Under increased pressure, this oxygen doesn't just stay in your red blood cells; it actually dissolves into all of your body’s fluids: including your plasma and cerebral spinal fluid. This allows the oxygen to reach areas where circulation might be restricted, providing deep-seated support for cellular repair and encouraging the body's natural healing processes.

What do you do during this time? Most of our clients find it incredibly meditative. You can:

  • Listen to a podcast or music.
  • Meditate and focus on your breathing.
  • Take a nap (many people find HBOT sleep to be some of the most refreshing they’ve ever had).
  • Simply enjoy the quiet.

It is a quiet, pressurised, and profoundly relaxing environment. You aren't just "waiting" for the session to end; you are giving your body the fuel it needs to boost energy levels naturally.

Depressurisation (The "Descent")

As we near the end of your session, we will slowly begin to reduce the pressure. This is the "descent." Just like the start of the session, you might feel a slight popping in your ears as they adjust back to the normal room pressure. Again, this is a very gentle process, and your technician will be talking to you through the process.

How You’ll Feel Afterwards: The Afterglow

After you step out of the chamber, people’s reactions vary, but they are almost always positive. Some feel an immediate "zing" of energy and mental clarity: as if a brain fog they didn't know they had has suddenly lifted. Others feel a deep sense of relaxation, similar to the feeling after a long, professional massage. Some dont feel any immediate changes but later report benefits.

You might feel a little hungry or thirsty, which is quite common as your metabolism has been given a little nudge by the extra oxygen. We always recommend staying well-hydrated after a session to help your body flush out waste products that may have been loosened during the process.

Why We Pair HBOT with Vasotherapy

At Flow Well, we often talk about the synergy between HBOT therapy and Vasotherapy. We call this combined approach "the Flow Well way" because it addresses the two most important factors in physical recovery: fuel and transport.

HBOT saturates your system with the "fuel" (oxygen). Vasotherapy then uses mechanical movement and compression to encourage your blood vessels to dilate and move that fuel exactly where it needs to go. While HBOT provides the saturation, Vasotherapy boosts circulation via circular mechanical movements, ensuring that the oxygen-rich blood reaches every corner of your body. It’s a holistic way to support your nervous system and encourage systemic wellbeing.

A Note on Consistency

While some people feel a difference after just one session: particularly a reduction in the feeling of "heaviness" in the limbs or a boost in mood: real, lasting change usually comes from consistency.

Think of HBOT as a form of training for your cells. Just as one trip to the gym won't make you an athlete, one oxygen session is just the beginning. Most people find that a series of 6 to 10 sessions allows the body to truly capitalise on the increased oxygen levels, supporting long-term energy and recovery.

Is It Right for You?

We understand that every body is unique. What works for one person seeking fibromyalgia support might be different for an athlete looking to speed up their recovery time.

That is why we don't believe in "one size fits all" solutions. We are here to help you navigate your own path to wellness. HBOT is a non-invasive, drug-free way to help your body ease back into balance.

If you have specific medical concerns, such as ear issues or certain lung conditions, we always recommend a quick chat with us first. However, for the vast majority of people, HBOT is a safe, gentle, and highly effective way to prioritise their health.
